Title: The Thaw

There were just some things he didn’t want to know. When Buffy seemingly moved all her belongings into his home, he didn’t ask why, or for how long. He only counted his blessings she was there… with him.

In his quiet moments, he could pretend. Pretend she was staying. Pretend that anything salvageable between them hadn’t been sealed with the Hellmouth beneath the rubble that was Sunnydale.

Days turned to months and months to seasons. She offered no answers, but the awkwardness between them melted in the spring thaw. Finding her amidst the meadows, Giles finally invited her to stay.

In the darkness there was the sound of screaming and the scent of dust upon the midnight breeze: the hallmark of a routine patrol on an ordinary night in a dingy town founded atop the mouth of hell. No big.

Buffy casually twirled her stake. Five tonight. Three journeymen with a yen to take on the Slayer and two hapless fledglings. She wasn’t sure why they were called fledglings. Maybe it had something to do with the whole vamps turning into bats thing. Was that even a thing?

Something to ask her Watcher as soon as he stopped seeing stars.

Summary: After helping to rebuild the Council, Buffy and Giles team up to search out artifacts and investigate supernatural issues on its behalf. This assignment takes them to Germany along the Mosel River to meet up with a man who has a couple of medieval manuscripts in his possession belonging to the Council and to the Giles family. What sort of wisdom can a long dead ancestor impart after 750 years? And what were his books doing in the possession of someone not affiliated with the Council?

Hello! On behalf of il_mio_capitano, rebelxxwaltz and I would like to extend our warmest welcome to Summer of Giles 2016!

To kick off the celebrations, reblexxwaltz and I decided that we would both write a short story (well, short for us!) to the same prompt and see what we could come up with and how different they might be from each other. We have often compared ourselves to Giles and Ethan (bonus points if you can guess who is who) so this was a fun exercise.

Prompt: Post Series, Giles and Ethan meet at a pub. Which path will their friendship take in the aftermath the apocalypse? The pub must be the World's End in Camden where rebelxxwaltz, il_mio_capitano, and I met up for our London 2012 adventures. Oh, and Ethan has to have a goatee.

A big fire in the warehouse district brings them back into contact, but what happens when the Slayer discovers her Watcher is a fireman?
