Five Things Giles Regretted and One He Didn't

Hello. It's my first posting day today. I bring six interconnected drabbles - Giles's thoughts about the six cast regulars - Buffy, Xander, Willow, Dawn, Anya and Spike - in the final season of BtVS.

Setting: Around the time of/during Chosen
Rating: PG
Pairing: Slight hints of Giles/Anya, if you squint.
600 words.
I'm not sure this title actually works, but I couldn't think of a better one.

Five Things Giles Regretted and One He Didn't

Xander

"Your turn, Giles."

Xander's solitary eye meets his, then focuses on the game again.

It's not the first time they've traded inconsequentialities while waiting for the apocalypse.

They've sat around this very table.

They've sat in other places; the school library, his old apartment, the magic shop.

But one thing is qualitatively different this time.

At some point, when he wasn't looking, the exasperating boy with the irreverent manner and flippant tongue became a man.

True, they still haven't much in common, but he'd be proud to call Xander a friend one day.

A pity this is probably their last.

*

Willow

In retrospect, he thinks he should have acted sooner.

The need to have everything how she wanted it was always there, after all.

Some might say he could be forgiven for thinking it harmless when all it amounted to was wanting her friends to be happy.

Some might say one couldn't foresee the quiet, studious girl becoming so powerful she could end the world with a gesture.

Despite what some might say, he can't forgive himself, and he should have foreseen it.

Not that it matters now. She'll either save them all, or kill them.

His failure won't change anything.

*

Dawn

He was ready to kill her once.

It's shocking, even to him, to know how easy he would have found it.

Not a young girl. Not Buffy's sister. Not human at all.

Maybe it was because, under close scrutiny, his fake memories of her seemed so...fake.

Or maybe it's because, since Drusilla stuck her black claws inside his thoughts, he's had a horror of anything tampering with his mind.

(As torture goes, more painful by far than Angelus at his most inventive).

Dawn looks up from her book and meets his eye. She doesn't smile.

Perhaps, deep down, she knows.

*

Anya

There have to be more aggravating people in the world.

He knows there are, in fact. The Watchers' Council is full of them.

But Anya would win first prize for doing the unexpected.

Look at her now, sleeping away what might be the last night of her life, when everyone around her is wide awake and jumpy as scared cats.

Not the first time she's marched to her own drummer.

He remembers so many occasions over the years when even trying to be human was beyond her.

Most of all, though, he remembers what it was like to kiss her.

*

Spike

The look Spike gives him as he sweeps past in Buffy's wake isn't friendly.

Well, they're not friends. Comrades in arms, maybe, but only of necessity.

If he has one regret where Spike's concerned, it's that Wood failed to kill him.

He should have done it himself, when he had Spike chained up in his bathtub. Instead, he deluded himself that a vampire that couldn't bite was harmless.

But that didn't stop Spike causing mayhem.

Still, today will probably be the end of him, as it will of all of them.

Hopefully, he'll be some actual use before he dies.

*

Buffy

"I think you've taught me everything I need to know."

The firm click of the door closing in his face had the sound of finality.

There's regret. Of course there is.

He'd like her to have always thought well of him.

But while he'll mourn the loss of the girl's perfect trust, he's proud to see the woman she's become, and to know that he played a part, however small, in shaping her.

The Hellmouth's open. He raises his weapon, braced for the onrushing wave of Turok Han.

If he dies today, it doesn't matter. His best work's behind him.

Ooh, nice job! Great look into Giles's mind just before the latest apocalypse.

If he dies today, it doesn't matter. His best work's behind him.

He did so much to influence all of these people, whether he or they accept it or not. Even when he wasn't trying to.

That's all we ever do, I suppose. Marvelous look at these moments, darling!

They all are perfect (and perfectly heartbreaking).

Sad but beautifully done.

These really packed some punch. Each last line hits a little bit harder.

If he dies today, it doesn't matter.

Although he will be fighting along side all of them, Giles will spend (what might be) his last day alone. :(

I loved these drabbles, but I want to whack Giles along side the head. If he's proud of what Buffy has become, he should tell her.

Wow! Buckets of Kudos! Plus extra points for the correct use of the word 'drabble'.

Lovely!

Drabbling at it's absolute best, Deb. Every one razor sharp and telling an epic story in minature.

"A pity this is probably their last." Shiver.

Very powerful drabbles, especially the Dawn one.

*applauds* That was excellent. Depressing, but excellent. :D

Very cool.

I love them all. Amazing drabbling skills. I especially liked the Spike one. That's exactly what Giles should regret about Spike.

Awesome work.

What a wonderful summation of seven seasons, of seven peoples', journey through the chaos of Sunnydale.
I loved every one of them, for their sharp observation and economy of words.

Oh these were sad, even though I know that will not be his last day. I love that even in brevity each regret (and one that isn't) is so well encapsulated. Really beautiful.

I really loved this one! It's really insightful. S07 didn't give us (or at least it didn't give me) closure on the coobies relationship. We have Giles and Will really close in England, but that's it. It hurts very much to see them so apart and with so many unresolved issues. I really liked the part about Willow, I also think Giles would feel somewhat like that. The part about Dawn really got to. "Dawn looks up from her book and meets his eye. She doesn't smile.". I like how BtVS keeps the edges on people and show complex human interactions, so yes, Giles says he thinks they should kill Dawn. Can't say I didn't thought of that. And yet, he did love her. I liked how you made a connection with his torture in S02. And I also think Dawn knows - probably why they aren't more close? 'Cause I truly think it would make sense fot them to be more close in S07. The part about Anya war heartwarming after the stung with Dawn ^^
I loved him describing Spike as comrades in arms. And Buffy... oh, what a fucked moment for all of us. And yet you brought me some solace in thinking he'd be proud =)

Really liked these! So insightful, the one about Dawn. Had to laugh at the second line in Anya's. And I quite liked how the set ended.

just heart wrenching. perfectly heart wrenching though! seriously these were amazing to read and it's clear you crafted every line. the last one, though, both heart and was a kind of benediction all in one.

Your words were the catalyst that allowed me to sink into Giles's thoughts ... and gaze. So much packed into so few words! I think my fave is the Dawn one; it plays perfectly off of Michelle T's direct focus.

But, then, I change my mind. No, I like the Xander one. Or the Anya one. ::flails with indecisiveness:: Okay, okay, it's a three-way tie!!!!!

Giles and his best, and worst.
