FIC: Before Sunnydale (no pairing) FR13/PG-13
Title: Before Sunnydale
Author:
aaronlisa
Rating: FR13/PG-13
Pairings/Characters Rupert Giles (no pairings, but there is an allusion to a M/M relationship)
Disclaimer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer belongs to Joss Whedon and company.
Warnings: There is an allusion to a possible M/M relationship and a M/M kiss.
Notes: Set pre-series.
Summary: Five vignettes looking at Giles and how he came to accept his destiny.
Word Count: 604
I.
He is lying on his back with his eyes tightly closed against the glare of the blindingly blue sky with the roar of the jets from the nearby military base echoing in his ears. His back is covered in sweat as the unforgiving sun beats down upon his wiry body and he’s trying to desperately not cry. Future Watchers do not cry, it’s unbecoming and he can only imagine what punishment his austere Grandmother will have for him if she were to catch him crying over the fact that he can’t be a fighter pilot or a green grocer in her rose garden. Especially when she has a much more prestigious future planned for him.
II.
He’s twenty-one and has recently left Oxford with his best mate Ethan Rayne. He’s abandoned everything his family thrust upon him, including his stodgy upper-class name. And he’s also currently drunk and high with the room spinning in crazy circles as he listens to Ethan chanting some dark spell or another. There’s still a part of him that’s inwardly cringing when Ethan ceases chanting to lean over Deirdre to place a kiss on his lips. But Ripper ignores it, just like his family has always ignored what he wants; he’s turned his back on them and his destiny in favour of lust and power. Ethan laughs when Deirdre moans at the sight of her boyfriend kissing his best mate ruining the moment for Ripper until Ethan gives him a dark smile promising him the world.
III.
Returning back to the fold wasn’t an easy decision for him to make but after being rejected by Ethan one too many times, he’s come to a crossroads. He can either continue on being Ripper or he can accept his destiny. Rupert’s older now and possibly wiser as well since becoming an aging Lothario who seduces young girls as he plays around with the dark arts isn’t as intriguing as it once was, especially after Randall’s death because of his tomfoolery. So he does the only thing he can, he takes a serious job at the British Museum and works his way back into the Council doing everything he can to prove and redeem himself.
IV.
Merrick’s death hits him hard, especially since the older man had forced Giles to promise that if anything should happen to him, he would take up his mission. He’s not ready and he’s uncertain of himself, after all it wasn’t that long ago that he was living in an untidy flat with Ethan Rayne plotting the destruction of everything that the Council stood for as they brought about a new order. He sighs and pinches his nose as he takes a few calming breaths. This is the destiny that his Grandmother and Father had tried to thrust upon his scrawny shoulders so many years ago, and it’s time for him to stop running.
V.
He’s never liked how the Council has treated their young charges, ignoring the fact that the fate of the world rests upon a young girl full of wants, needs and desires. And as he takes in the scent of the books that the Council had shipped him, Giles makes a decision. He won’t be what Travers expects him to be, he will be his own man and he will treat his Slayer differently. She won’t be just a foot soldier of no consequence in their war against evil; instead he will do his best to keep in mind that she’s a young girl on the brink of womanhood who has been charged with a destiny that she probably doesn’t want much like he had once been.

I've always been fascinated by Giles and how he rejects his destiny before ultimately accepting it.

What a great way to showcase Giles' life pre-Buffy.
Thank you so much for sharing!
