Drabble: Tea Snob

Like any good Brit, he loved his tea, but he wasn’t too particular about type or band. He was happy enough with PG Tips or Yorkshire Tea as he was with something much posher. Which was probably for the best since he had to choke down Liptons on more than one occasion during his time in America.

 

Buffy was a different story. There really wasn’t a tea that she didn’t enjoy, but she had definite preferences. There were specific tea sellers in London that she would frequent and her loose teas took up a full cabinet in their house in Bath. She could tell you in detail the differences between Assam and Darjeeling and why she preferred genmaicha in particular to all other green teas. It made him laugh, since he was the one that introduced her to tea in the first place, and now she was the one educating him. That and because she always looked so baffled as to why he didn’t already know all of this already.

 

Giles took a sip of the Lapsang Souchong that she had just brewed for him —her favorite— and sighed with pleasure. He had to admit, she did have excellent taste.

Ha! No, it just makes you a rare Brit. I have encounter a few of you non-tea drinking Brits, but you are few and far between! :-D

That was lovely. I really like the thought that if Buffy was going to get into tea, she was going to do it in the biggest way possible. And it's a great inversion of the usual trope of Giles being a tea snob.

Thank you! I like turning tropes on their head and the idea that Giles was a tea drinker, but not very particular sort of fit my image of him.

The idea for this actually came when one of my Brit friends came to visit me and admitted that she really didn't know much about teas. She normally just drunk PG Tips. So, when I asked her if she preferred Assam or Ceylon, she didn't know. And we both laughed that the American was educating the Brit on tea! :-D

Ok, this was beyond adorable! I can totally see Buffy getting carried away with something in Giles' space like tea and then running with it. And I love the quiet domesticity of this. Whether they are friends or a couple (can be read as either), it just feels so comfortable between them, and that they've finally found the quiet life after everything. I love it!
