Something to ask her Watcher, as soon as he stopped seeing stars, was why he bothered to train her in the quarterstaff, at all. She used stakes.

“Because it’s good physical conditioning,” said Merrick. “Once you’ve advanced a bit more, we’ll start training you in weapons that you’ll actually find useful on a hunt.”

But, months later, it was a different Watcher who began her weapons training. And he picked a quarterstaff, of all things, to start her off with. Seriously. She’d have to ask him if he ever bothered to read Merrick’s journals. Right after she kicked his butt.

Thank you! I like playing with expectations. I'm also a little intrigued by Merrick since we know so little about him from the show. (I know I'm not supposed to, but I still picture Donald Sutherland in his hat and trench coat instead.)

Yeah, I agree. Though I think Giles did eventually get his hands on them. Especially after an incident like this one ;-)

I think it's more likely that Merrick did things his own way and Giles was never given his journals and therefore had no real idea of what Buffy's past training was. So he made reasonable assumptions and found out the hard way that he was wrong.

Well, maybe she didn't bring a quarterstaff out on her patrols, but she's used various objects like you would a quarterstaff. a pool cue comes to mind.

Well done, one of my favorite scenes between them was when he was training her with the quarterstaff, it was hilarious. :)

Yes, Buffy was always creative like that and being trained with a quarterstaff wasn't a bad idea. It's just turned out she already knew a lot about the quarterstaff. I love that scene too.
