Giles takes the Myers-Briggs.

"Here's the stuff you wanted," Andrew said.

A sheaf of papers were dropped emphatically in front of Giles as he sat at this desk."What is it?" he asked. Considering that he was on his first cup of office tea and he'd not been sleeping all that well lately, he thought it was a reasonable question.

"Tests," said Andrew.

Giles looked at him, unenlightened.

"Personality tests. For hiring people." Andrew drew a deep breath as though he were going to launch into a very detailed explanation.

Giles cut in quickly, "Right. Yes."

But Andrew went right on, "We can't just rely on luck setting up the Watcher's Council again …"

Giles murmured, "I'm not sure we want to do that."

"Or some sort of organization, a clearing house of information," Andrew continued relentlessly. "We'll need smart people to do research, but they can't be evil. It's real easy for smart people to be evil. We need a screening process."

Giles noted how much Andrew had come to identify with this fresh mission of helping the new Slayers.

"And out in the field, we'll need operatives," Andrew's voice seemed to capitalize the last word.

Giles brought them back to the task at hand, "Well, I look these over; I'm not sure they're quite the thing to help us." Psychological testing. Would it better than the Watchers' system of familial links, the son or daughter of a Watcher securing a place in the organization? The Tradition. The Duty, that stern daughter of the voice of God or Quentin Travers.

But, perhaps, the Old Guard would be reluctant to sign up now. Not wanting to have their loved ones blown up and all.

"All right, Andrew, I'll look these over."

Alone with his stack of papers, Giles resignedly opened the first folder.

Do you like to be alone? Or are you outgoing? Do you plan ahead or just let things unfold? Katherine Briggs and Isabel Myers developed this questionnaire to help you find your personality type. Listed below are statements for you to read and mark your responses:

o – not like me at all
1 – somewhat like me
2 – exactly like me

Giles read on, glancing at the contents and settling on some at random.

I get energized by socializing and talking to people.

Well, no. That would be an 0, I think.

I feel drained if I spend a lot of time with people. Even talking on the phone for too long can be exhausting.

That's overstating the case. Though, I remember Buffy being rather exhausting. Her whole cadre of teenagers could be quite enervating. But we adjusted to each other. Oz was the most restful to be with.

I prefer to work by myself on projects and tasks.

For a moment Giles envisioned himself researching, locating, and dispatching demons on his own. What the Americans called a triple-threat. No, that would be more efficient but not a workable solution to having to deal with other people.

I tend to be practical, realistic and matter-of-fact.

Got it in one, thought Giles. Or maybe that's my idealized self. Is it practical to be in a graveyard at midnight waiting for the dead to rise?

I pay little attention to what is going on in my immediate surroundings. I can be very unaware of the here and now.

That would be a way to end up dead quickly.

I watch for, and pay attention to, implications and inferences.

I do now. The Watchers' Training Program did not emphasize subtlety. Identify your target, dispatch the Slayer, write report. That's how it was supposed to work. Nothing about vampires with souls. Or Slayers with mystic siblings.

I have been accused of not paying attention to other people's needs and feelings.

Numerous times. Times without number. On many occasions.

I like to talk about interpersonal relationships and emotions.

Giles took a break from reading and sipped some of tepid tea. He noticed his glasses on the desk, picked them up and held them up to the light. He really didn't understand how them always seemed to smudged. Retrieving his pocket handkerchief, the gave the lenses a thorough rubbing. He read the last statement again and decided his answer would probably be no.

I take criticism very personally and I have been accused of being too sensitive.

Well, thought Giles, if we found someone who agreed with that, this would not be the place for him, or her. Slayers are not known for treading softly around others' feelings.

I dislike having things undecided.

I have my particular ways of doing things. I don't like it when others try to change my schedule, especially at the last minute.

I like to know what the schedules and time frames are. If there's no plan, I feel uneasy.

On the other hand, Giles thought, a person who needs this much structure will soon find that the demon world is more spontaneous. Or chaotic. Giles laughed to himself, remembering his first encounter with Wyndam-Price. Giles had heard lately that Wyndam-Price had a distinctly less rigid approach to the job now. Probably why he was still alive.

Giles closed the folder in front of him and gave the whole stack a small push away. This wasn't for him. It might be a brave, new world where one's personality could reckoned with penciled-in circles but does the vampire you're staking care whether you're an extrovert or introvert. "Andrew," he called, "Could you come here?"

Andrew was at the door before Giles was done speaking, "Yes, Chief?"

"I have asked you not to call me that, or Boss, or Captain. My name will suffice."

"Yes, sir." Andrew paused. "Giles."

"I think we'll put these tests, this approach on the back burner for the time being. We're consolidating; we need time to think things through."

Andrew said, "Okay." But Giles thought he sounded disappointed.

"But," continued Giles, "if we ever decide to go this route, you will be in charge of administering the program." Because, Giles thought, catch me marking test papers at my time of life. "Okay?"

"Sure, the background I have in dealing with aberrant personalities will help, you know."

"Indeed," said Giles. " So shall we get to work on tracking down some reference material. I like to have my books around me. You can never be too knowledgeable."

"I've found some leads," said Andrew, grabbing the useless folders from the desk, "I put these and away and bring them in."

When Andrew was writing in his diary that night he put several exclamations points after noting his being in charge of any future testing of operatives; he also wrote that he thought Giles was a perfect INTJ.

I like it. I've always had a soft spot for stories of Andrew taking it upon himself to be the perfect assistant for Giles. This was a great one.

Bwwaaah - I'm an INTJ, so I'd be very, very happy to have Giles on my team!

Really neat idea! Nicely done *g*

OMG, I am so stealing this and using it in every possible way out of context!

I giggled a lot during this. Best illustrative use of cleaning glasses ever.

This is very funny. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get to it. Giles avoiding the question he's reading by cleaning his glasses was laugh out loud.

You've been nominated!
