The last refugees out of Sunnydale trundled up to the motel in the same yellow school bus that had recently prevented them from being swallowed by the Earth along with that accursed little town. They pulled around the back to the parking lot and stopped. Buffy and Giles stepped out and made their way to the office, footsteps sluggish as the adrenaline of the morning had given way to battle fatigue and crushed hopes that there might be beds to rest up in.

They had indeed been the final batch out, and then only making it by the skin of their teeth. However, in the preceding days, every other citizen of Sunnydale had also beat a hasty retreat. As a result, all of the closest hotels, motels and even hostels were full to capacity.

They were three towns away from the sink hole they'd left behind before they saw a single vacancy sign without a 'No' brightly lit in front of it. Then when they'd stopped there, they had found only a couple of rooms available. They could easily have dropped a couple of passengers at each place accepting guests but nobody liked the idea of being separated from the others so soon after what they'd survived. So on they'd driven through another four towns. Buffy had begun to think they'd have to make a straight shot to LA before they found enough rooms to take them in.

The blue neon vacancy sign of the Asher Inn called to their last reserves of tired optimism like a beacon. Giles held the lobby door open for Buffy, who smiled as she passed through. She knew that inside he was probably still as pissed with her as she was with him. He still couldn't help but hold the door for a lady.

They never stayed angry with each other for long no matter how deep the cut; and though it seemed they could wound each other more acutely than anyone else could, the boundlessness of their ability to forgive each other always saved them in the end. Even still furious with him, it had been his evaluation of her plan she had placed the most value on. Even still livid with her, his pride in her was obvious. Because of this, Buffy knew that they would talk it out and it would sting, but it would also scab over and one day be just another scar, indistinguishable from all the others they'd collectively acquired. But today was not that day. They needed food, rest and a chance to absorb everything that had happened before they went lumbering in, emotions raw and nerves frayed.

Giles stepped up to the counter spinning a plausible story to explain away their number and lack of luggage. He lamented about their party being on a school trip on the way out of Sunnydale when the town had collapsed into a crater. It sounded even better than the first time he'd tried it only to find out there was only one available room. It helped that the destruction of Sunnydale was leading the news on the television behind the counter. It also helped that the clerk was an older lady who was clearly under the impression that Giles was the bees knees. Buffy grinned as she watched her Watcher turn on the charm acquiring the rooms and then whipping out a credit card powered by the deep accounts of the Watchers Council; which thankfully did not go boom with the actual Council itself.

They'd managed to secure enough rooms with two double beds in each. Just outside the lobby, Buffy and Giles started to do the math.

"Well," Buffy said with a furrowed brow. "If Woods bunks with Andrew then you and Xander could..."

"I don't think Faith is going to let Principal Woods out of her sight tonight. It's alright, I'll sleep on the floor of Xander and..."

"You'll sleep with me," Buffy sighed.

"P-pardon?"

Buffy grinned. "I mean, you'll take the other bed in my room. I trust you and it's the only way to pair everyone up evenly. I think the least we've all earned is a to sleep in a bed tonight."

"You trust me?"

"To not rip my clothes off and jump me in the night? Yeah, I think I can safely trust you there. As to anything else, let's give it a couple of days before we dig that splinter out, okay? I'm exhausted and I know you must be too."

Giles nodded his head wearily. "A champion plan on all counts."

"It has been known," she turned toward the bus.

Giles' hand on her shoulder stopped her. She turned to face him. "Buffy..."

She arched an eyebrow, waiting for him to finish. He gestured helplessly, seemingly unable to articulate whatever it was he wanted to say. Finally he gave up with a sigh, instead opting to sweep errant strands of her long blonde hair behind her ear. Buffy's eyes filled with sudden tears and she moved forward quickly, wrapping her arms around his middle. His circled her back and squeezed her close to him.

To be continued...

EDIT (7/31/10): I'm not going to make the WIP Free For All day unfortunately. We're just beginning a remodel on the house and I just didn't get any writing time this week. Fear not, part 2 is nearly complete and the rest is outlined. I will post the other parts here (or link here). I hope to have part two up before next weekend. Thank you for all the amazing comments. You've all given me back the writing bug. Now if only RL would cooperate! Love to all!- GG
