3 Drabbles: Drinking, Smoking and Rock & Roll

Rating: G
Word count: 300
Summary: Giles reflects on three different vices.  Setting could be anytime, but I see it as Season Four.

Drinking:

A single sip of the amber liquid is allowed to slowly roll over his tongue. The harsh fire of that first moment settles into oak and chocolate and berry. There was a time he would have bolted the entire glass, looking for the rush of inebriation, not taste. Now no matter how fast the next apocalypse approaches or how many hours he feels slipping through his hands, when he sits down to have a glass he takes the time to enjoy it. Though this is a quiet time that he keeps to himself, someday he would like to share it.

Smoking:

He stares at the small white cylinder between his fingers, watching smoke rise from the tip. It's not a habit he indulges in often – trying to keep up with Buffy while hacking away would simply not do – but occasionally . . . occasionally there is something lovely about that first rush of nicotine into his lungs, the tingling in the back of his brain and the burn on his vocal chords. He found this pack at the bottom of his desk drawer, its sharp poking edges reminding him of that day and night where he turned frighteningly, horrendously young again.

Rock & Roll:

Buffy sneers at his albums without glancing at the covers, Xander takes a step back as if they are contaminated with some vague disease. He knows Willow is not interested in music for itself, and is curious simply because she wants to find out, to know. But it's Oz who lifts them out of the rack, fingertips reverently glancing over cover art, only to carefully place one back in and go through the rest with a musician's (or perhaps a predator's) eye. In these moments they share a kinship of nods and raised eyebrows, wordless communication of good, better, best.
