Summary: Vampire!Rupert leaves... and comes back

Nothing had gone like he'd expected. That was one of the things he would always love about Faith. She could surprise even him, even when he thought he knew her better than anything.

She had come to him that night. She had kissed him, seeking something in the gesture. When they'd parted, she'd studied him long and hard then asked one thing of him. “Whatever you want to do to me, let this child live. Let it grow and be under your protection rather than hunted by you. After it's born, you can have me in whatever way you want.”

He'd stared at her and didn't answer for a long time. He never actually had answered her at all.

Faith couldn't bring herself to kill Rupert Giles. Not only was he a phenomenally powerful vampire, but she still loved him. So she made him and Val pay in other ways. The numbers of vampires dwindled no matter how they tried to build an army.

Val was getting quite annoyed.

Rupert and Faith crossed paths regularly. Neither ever walked away with physical wounds.

What she kept from him was that she had gone to the school. She had told Buffy and the others what had become of their one-time hero. They were planning to take him down.

One young Slayer was trying to play double agent. She was killed before anyone knew for sure which team she was playing for. Brutally slaughtered and left of the school's steps for Faith to find.

She snapped and went after Giles herself. Val arrived to intervene.

Somehow it was decided that if Val and Rupert left, Faith would ensure no one followed them but they had to leave and stay away from commonly Slayer patrolled areas, like Rome, Toronto, Cleveland and the like.

So Val left Rupert and Faith to say goodbye. The ring in his pocket once more.

Rupert told her he had a gift for her and held out his hand. She held out hers in turn, her hand was flat where his was in a fist, holding the trinket tightly. He released it and she stared at the ring in awe. “What does this mean?” She had asked in a whisper.

They decided that it was a memory. For now.

For now meaning that might change.

* * *

All of that had been more than five years ago. Not long at all for Rupert who had been in heaven exploring new places, learning new languages and pushing his powers to the limits every chance he got. Somehow, Faith had gotten a message to him with a picture of their son, his date of birth and an assurance that he was as perfect as they could possibly have dreamed.

“I have to go back.” Rupert told Val casually.

The blonde woman studied him. “Why?” She asked with a crinkle to her nose.

“My son will be five in a few days.” Rupert replied. “I think it's time.”

Val shook her head. “My silly, sentimental prince.” She cooed and kissed him.

He caressed her cheek. “Perhaps. But oh, to see Faith's face.” He smiled cruelly.

He arrived back in Cleveland the day before his son's birthday, but didn't make himself know until the next day. He watched them, stunned at seeing the young boy holding Faith's hand as they walked. He could tell that Faith knew he was there. He could see it in the way she moved, the way she held her shoulders, the way she took in her surroundings without seeming too. She had clearly continued her vigorous training. That she knew he was there didn't surprise him What surprised him what the little boy's soft voice. “Vampires, Mommy? Or something else?” There was a hint of fear in his voice. No, not fear exactly. A healthy, wary respect, but not fear. He trusted his mother to protect him.

“A powerful vampire.” Faith replied honestly.

The boy nodded.

“This one is different, GT.” Faith said gently and she brought herself and the boy to a stop. “Come on out.” She called to Rupert.

So he did. Rupert stepped out from the shadows and bowed his head to Faith and 'GT' in greeting.

The boy gasped, his blue eyes widening. “Daddy!” He breathed.

Rupert snapped his head to the boy then looked at Faith, beyond stunned.

Faith merely nodded at GT. “Yes, sweetheart.” She looked at Rupert then. “It's about time you came to meet him.” She said, almost accusingly.

Rupert wasn't entirely sure how to respond but didn't reveal that he'd been so thrown off balance.

“My name is Giles Anthony Lehane. GT for short. Cuz GA sounds stupid.” The boy said, moving forward without hesitation.

Faith put a hand to the boy's shoulder, stopping him from approaching. Rupert had never promised her not to hurt their child and until he did, she wasn't going to let the boy too close.

Rupert met her eyes and after a brief and silent exchange, he nodded. Their son was safe from him and that alone would keep him safe from most other vampires as well.

Faith's hand lifted and GT ran to Rupert, hugging him as if they had known one another his whole life. “Mommy knew you were coming.” He said with a smile. “She had her special dreams and they told her.”

Faith watched the duo intensely and Rupert could see how very much she had longed to see this over the years. He picked GT up and held him easily on his hip. “Did she now.” It wasn't really a question. “Your Mommy is a very special Slayer, you know.”

“Oh I know. The only ones even close to being so special as her are Sissy and Kennedy.” GT said with pride.

“Sissy?” Rupert echoed in amusement.

“Yeah. Buffy.” GT clarified, grinning impishly. “She hates to be called that.”

Rupert looked to Faith at that one.

“The daughter you never had and the son you never knew. I figured they should be close.” Faith said quietly in explanation.

His. For always, Faith was his. Her thoughts, her life, revolved around him, even when he wasn't there. He thought again about how this must be hell for her. He couldn't decide exactly what to do about it. It would be deliciously fun to torture her and yet so much simpler for them both if he just turned her. He looked at GT. But where would that leave their son?

“Can I stay with you tonight, Daddy?” GT asked.

Rupert blinked again. This child was not at all what he'd expected. He looked to Faith. She was the boy's mother after all, and he a vampire. He didn't understand why this child had no fear of him when he clearly knew and understood what vampires were.

Without hesitation, Faith nodded. Rupert Giles was a man of his word and that didn't change just because he became a vampire. It was just that his word changed. He had promised to protect their son. She had no doubts he would abide by that. “It's your decision. He can be... a handful.”

“Please, Daddy?” GT insisted, his tiny hands fists in Rupert's shirt, his bright eyes wide and shining with anticipation.

Rupert was still confused, but he agreed. It only took a moment for he and Faith to make arrangements on where they would meet and when. Before leaving 'the boys', Faith came to them and kissed them both. So close, Rupert could see the pain she was still in. She was thinner, harder and softer at once. She walked away, looking back only once to wave at GT, who lovingly waved back. “What would you like to do, GT?” Rupert asked.

“Anything. I don't know. What do vampires do?” GT answered.

Rupert shook his head in amusement. “Why don't we start with a walk. You can tell me more about Mommy and you and Sissy. You said Mommy knew I was coming.”

“Uh-huh. She said you were coming for her. It's okay, you know. You're like... like Wesley and Buttercup. Sissy will take care of me.” GT said calmly. He loved his mother to pieces and didn't want to lose her, but he knew about her dreams and he knew that she would always, always love him.

Rupert was amused by the reference and didn't reply to the rest right away. “I haven't decided what I'm going to do. I came to meet you.” This was the truth.

GT smiled sadly. “Maybe. But those dreams always come true.” He murmured.

“That's not actually true.” Rupert replied.

GT rolled his eyes. “It is with Mommy. She's different.”

Rupert decided not to argue. For all he knew, GT could be right. “I haven't made up my mind yet,” was all he could say in response.

So the night passed with father and son talking and learning about one another. It was a very pleasant night in a way Rupert hadn't thought to ever experience, especially once he'd been turned.

The peace was shattered when he brought GT to the meeting spot, however.

“How could you?! How dare you take that kind of risk with GT!” Buffy. And she was positively seething with fury and fear.

“There was no risk. You know as well as I that the base personality of a being don't change. Giles was always a man of his word. Being a vampire, the general word changed but he swore he wouldn't hurt our son and I have no doubt at all that he held to that.”

“You're an idiot!” Buffy growled. “What better way to get to you than through your son?!”

“None.” Faith sounded exhausted, like they had been having this fight for hours and just running in circles with it.

“He's going to come here with a corpse and it will be your fault! Just like his death was.”

Faith quivered, muscles twitching and Rupert chose then to intervene, not pleased at all that anyone else dare torment his soulmate. “I bring our son back whole and in perfect health. Though about ready to fall asleep.”

Faith couldn't look at him and he knew she didn't want him to see that she too blamed herself for his death.

Buffy scowled, even more angry for having been proved wrong, it seemed. Or perhaps, more angry that Faith had been proved right. “Aren't you just the perfect happy little family!”

“Do you want Faith and GT to leave the school?” Rupert asked. “For you're certainly driving her away. And where she goes, so goes our son.”

“Oh HELL no!” Buffy snapped. “GT stays at the school no matter what. He learns how to fight demons, not act like they're regular people. Like that stupid movie with the Zombies as pets.”

Rupert shifted, his eyes turning yellow and it was the first time any of them had seen him with his 'game face' (except GT as he'd asked Rupert to show him). He noticed Faith stare at him, her expression unreadable, even for him. Buffy paled and looked a little ill. “I'm sure Angel and Spike will appreciate those sentiments.” Rupert smirked.

“Th-that's different...” Buffy whispered.

“You couldn't slay them. Why don't we see if you can slay me.” Rupert put GT in Faith's arms and turned on Buffy.

Well I think you have the kernel of a good idea and the ability to flesh it out into something very good.
