Dancing
Pairings: Rupert Giles/Cordelia Chase
Characters: Giles, Cordelia, mentions of the other members of the Scooby Gang.
Rating: frg
Notes: Takes place after The Prom.
The lights danced around the gym much like the students, although more serenely and more in time with the music. These children enjoying themselves. No, not children anymore. At least they go 17 years of happy memories. Some only had 15, 16, but at least they had that. And at least the majority didn't know what was coming. He smirked. None of them knew what was actually coming but a handful of people in this gym knew that there was a large possibility that, in a few weeks, not everyone would be here. Maybe not anyone. In this gym, in Sunnydale, in California. In the world. Although he wanted to try to be positive for the students, he had to admit, it looked more and more likely that The Mayor would succeed.
Giles wiped his glasses.
"It's kind of sad." He slipped his glasses back on and looked up to Cordelia. "Everyone here. Dancing, enjoying themselves, teachers and students having fun together, shockingly." She gestured at him. "And here you are. All on your lonesome."
"Is there a point, Cordelia?"
"I know you can dance. I saw you dance after Buffy killed the Master, remember?"
"You better get back to Wesley. Don't let him know that I told you this but he is quite taken with you."
Cordelia smiled that bright smile of hers. "I like him." She looked out on the dance floor. "But Oz is setting up with the band for a few songs so Wesley's dancing with Willow for a while." She looked back at Giles, pointedly. "And that leaves me all on my ownsome."
"I don't dance."
She moved closer to him, reaching a hand out to him, smiling, and lowered her voice. "I bet you give Wesley a run for his money."
Giles smiled in spite of himself. "I must say, the way Wesley's been behaving around you, I can't imagine any reason why he would dance with Willow instead of you."
"I asked him to." Her smile, her eyes, nor her hand ever dropped.
He took her hand. He was aware of the "Scoobies" slowly looking over shocked, but he didn't care. He was curious. She led him to the dancefloor near the Scoobies but away from them. The unlikely heroes together and paired off. Enjoying themselves. Wesley, standing in for Oz, with Willow; Angel and Buffy, as it should be tonight, whatever happens tomorrow; Xander and Anya, possibly the strangest pairing in the room. And Rupert and Cordelia.
She turned around and placed her hand on his shoulder while he put his on her waist and took her other hand in his. They danced in awkward silence for a few seconds.
"You're hating this, aren't you?" Giles looked at her. "You should enjoy yourself." She looked him straight in the eye. "We could all be dead by graduation." He frowned. Had she really read his mind? Cordelia laughed. "It's what we're all thinking. None of us are saying it but it's there." He spun her once and when he slipped his hand on her waist again, he felt as though she was closer than before.
"Does that not worry you? Wouldn't you rather be trying to find a way to stop it?"
"Yes. But if we're going to die, we might as well have a few hours of untainted happiness and joy before it happens."
Giles looked her in the eye, something he had been trying to avoid and pulled her closer. "This doesn't seem like you."
Cordelia shrugged. "Maybe I'm tired of being angry at Xander and Willow, of being the bitch of Sunnydale, of wanting an ordinary life when I know that there are unordinary things out there."
Giles laughed. "Well, Miss Chase, you are anything but ordinary."
