Fic: The New Slayer, Part Four
Title: The New Slayer (4/?)
Author:
lilruca
Rating: PG 13 (I think)
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Giles/Faith
Warnings: Season 4, Slightly AU
Disclaimer: I'd really LIKE to own Faith and Giles...But I don't.
Summary: I really didn't expect the ending of this and all I can say is Buffy should hope Ripper never gets set loose again...
No one really thought anything of the fact that the hospital called Rupert Giles when they discovered Faith missing. There was a question or two but no real suspicion. His distress was promptly attributed to the fact that Faith was a ‘Rogue Slayer’ and therefore considered as evil as Angelus…or worse still. No one thought for a moment that it was because he loved her. For some reason he wanted to tell them, but he didn’t. He couldn’t. Not until he told Faith herself.
Buffy promised to keep an eye out, the others promised to avoid her. Rupert himself didn’t know where to even begin looking. He checked the few places that came to mind but to no avail. It seemed each moment they were apart now that she was awake broke his heart a little more.
One evening, Buffy came into his apartment without knocking as Rupert was sitting to a tumbler of bourbon and doing a little more research. This wasn’t entirely unusual but wasn’t common either. He glanced up at her. “Buffy. Is something wrong? Have you found Faith?” He couldn’t help the hopefulness that crept into his tone.
She didn’t respond vocally, merely standing with one hand on her hip and looking at him as though to say ‘What, are you fucking crazy?’.
He put down the tumbler and stood, studying her since she seemed in no way about to aid him in figuring out what had brought her here. He studied the outfit, leather pants, black tank top. His brows furrowed slightly and he met her eyes. His body trembled with recognition before his mind put it together. In her eyes, he saw the glint of moonlight on the iron gates that opened only for him. “Faith!” He nearly gasped and stepped forward, longing to take her in his arms. Only what was she thinking? Why was she here?
“I know I look a little wrong, but don’t your girl even get a hug?” Buffy… no, Faith drawled.
Rupert closed the distance between them in an instant, taking her in his arms in a crushing embrace. “My god… how did this happen?”
She snuggled into his arms, feeling safe at last. “Sugar Daddy Wilkins left me a present. This is what it did. So I thought I’d try on Princess Buffy’s life for size. Her boyfriend loves her. But who doesn’t?”
Rupert caressed her cheek and forced her to meet his eyes. “I love you, Faith.”
Faith withdrew from him and didn’t say anything at first. She hugged herself, trembling even more than when Riley had whispered the words to who he thought was Buffy. “No. No. Don’t. Please.” She whispered…whimpered. Love meant pain.
Rupert frowned and gently touched her shoulder, braced for the jump he felt from her. “Let me teach you what love means to me. I sincerely doubt it’s what you’ve been taught before.” Faith stepped back, stepping into him. She desperately wanted to trust someone. She wanted to trust him. She just didn’t know how. His arms wrapped around her and he kissed her neck, forgetting it was Buffy’s body because she was simply so very Faith. He gently turned her, kissed her upon the mouth, deep and fierce and desperate. He had missed her so very much and he needed her to know it.
She melted into him, trembling and terrified. “How? How when I killed our child?” Faith demanded of him.
“You didn’t. Buffy did.” Rupert’s voice was strange when he said the blonde’s name, cold and unforgiving.
Faith wouldn’t hear of it. “She only wanted to save Angel-Eyes. She only did it because of what I did. That means I killed him.”
“Him?” Rupert echoed, still holding her close.
“I thought it was a boy.” Faith nodded. “Please…”
That tone had only meant one thing before, one need. But this time, Rupert wasn’t sure he could comply. “I don’t know, Faith. Not like this. Not in her body.”
Faith didn’t say anything more. Somehow they ended up together after all, a tangled mass of limbs that stuck together with sweat and saliva and other fluids.
When the sun rose, she was gone.
When Buffy came in later, wearing Faith’s skin, Rupert responded as he figured she would like him to respond, pretending he knew nothing of the switch beforehand. He didn’t mind lying to her as much as he once had. Though the troubled expression on Faith’s face pained him a little more because it was Faith’s face.
When he saw them fighting later, saw the hate that Faith had for herself, he was nearly sick. He wanted to go after her, to shelter her and show her just how beautiful she was as herself. Much more so as Faith than as Buffy. But she was gone, hiding – running from what she had exposed.
Was this strike three? Would he ever see her again? Rupert glanced at Buffy and winced just a little. Buffy was his Slayer, though he was no longer officially a Watcher. He couldn’t hate her. He couldn’t.
So Ripper hated her enough for them both.
